Der Schauplatz Eisenbahn is the largest and one of the most important railway museums in Germany and Europe. Whether young or old, whether technology fan, model railway enthusiast or railway photographer, we convey living railway history at the authentic location of the Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf marshalling yard and railway depot. Built in 1898 as a hub for raw materials, semi-finished products and goods from Chemnitz and the Ore Mountains, goods were shipped from here all over the world until 1996.
The railway venue has an extensive stock of steam, diesel and electric locomotives of various series as well as historic passenger and freight cars that are well worth seeing. Visit us and see unique technical installations, such as the worldwide unique rope pay-off system, the historical supply and feeding systems as well as a workshop from the steam locomotive era.
Multiple exhibitions convey interesting railway knowledge. Experience the railway from the perspective of an engine driver in our 300 m long signal garden and visit the driver's cab of our locomotive 44 1338.
