The cultural and festival town of Bad Elster delights visitors all year round with a very varied and radiant programme of plays. The cultural centre is the over 100-year-old King Albert Theatre, one of the most beautiful historic theatres in Germany. The annual Chursächsische Festspiele (Saxon Festival), which begins in September, traditionally opens the new season in Bad Elster.
The 23rd edition celebrates culture "as in royal times" as an important part of the successful health and cultural tradition in the anniversary year of 175 years of the Royal Saxon State Spa . In the course of preserving the supra-regional significance of the unique royal complexes of sophisticated spa and park architecture and the seven historic event venues on the "Festival Mile of Short Distances", which is unique here worldwide, the Culture Saxony Festival is thus a further, special highlight in the anniversary year 2023.
The 23rd Chursächsische Festspiele will open on 8 September with the concert spectacle "Carmina Burana & Die Moldau" as a powerful season finale in the NaturTheater. Other highlights of the multi-voiced festival programme include the Symphony Concert of the Chursächsische Philharmonie on Historic Instruments, dedicated to Mendelssohn, with the Hammer Hammer. Instruments with fortepiano specialist Tobias Koch (15.09.) and the festive final concert on Unity Day with "Bruckner 6" and the Czech National Symphony Orchestra Prague as EUCHESTRA EGRENSIS (03.10). In addition, the cabaret artist Erwin Pelzig (16.09.), the acting stars Ulrich Tukur & Christian Redl (23.09.), an amorous theatre evening with HOPPES HOFTHEATER (09.09.) as well as inspiring festival concerts by Anna Loos (17.09.), Götz Alsmann (30.09.) and the ladies of Salut Salon (01.10.). Other Festival highlights include a theatre-film evening about the great Armin Mueller-Stahl (10.09), a piano evening onClara Schumann's birthday (13.09), the fairy-tale performance with the "Ugly Duckling"(24.09) and the fairy-tale ballet"Cinderella" (29.09). The festival programme is rounded off with the Exhibition "Menschenbilder"(10.09.-19.11.) as an exclusive exhibition of paintings and prints by Armin Mueller-Stahl in the KunstWandelhalle and a Festspielkino historical film of the last King of the Saxons (18.09.).
In addition, a unique world of lights stages the festival nights in the Royal Gardens. Here, the beauties of Bad Elster can be experienced in a whole new way at atmospheric locations, through shimmering water features and against a glowing natural backdrop: guests stroll along illuminated paths to mystical places and illuminated works of art in a world of light - as an evening walk in a sparkling play of lights!
