Measuring the World: Historical clocks, globes and early scientific instruments demonstrate the technological progress of the past.
The Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon was founded under August the Strong in 1728 and remains today one of the world’s most important museums of historical scientifi c instruments.
The Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon is the oldest museum in the famous Baroque complex of the Dresden Zwinger and now has a completely redesigned exhibition showing an array of devices used over past centuries for measuring the world. These include globes, clocks, automata, burning mirrors, telescopes, and other scientifi c instruments, which are fascinating not only on account of their function but also for their beauty. The exhibits can be viewed close-up, to such an extent that even the tiniest engravings and decorative details are revealed. For the first time, animations provide insights into the internal workings of selected objects. The new exhibition presents the history of the collection in four chapters.
